  • White moves first; players alternate, moving one piece according to its unique movement rules.
  • Capture by moving onto an opponent’s square; protect your king at all times.
  • Respond to check by blocking, moving, or capturing; never leave your king in check.
  • Use castling, en passant, and pawn promotion to gain advantages.
  • Deliver checkmate—trap the opponent’s king with no legal moves—to win. Stalemate is a draw.
